✨ TESSILAND STUDIOFrequently Asked Questions about Wool Blend Yarn
What is wool blend yarn and why choose it over pure wool?
Wool blend yarn combines wool fibre with acrylic, cotton or viscose to bring together the best of each: wool contributes warmth and softness, synthetic fibre contributes durability, ease of washing and more accessible prices. Compared to pure wool, it holds up better in the washing machine and keeps its shape longer — without sacrificing the quality of natural fibre.
Does Tessiland wool blend yarn itch?
It depends on the wool content and type. Blends with Mulesing Free merino wool (Edith, Metallica) are incredibly soft and practically itch-free, even in direct contact with sensitive skin. Blends with a more robust wool (Barry) are slightly more rustic — great for jumpers worn over a shirt. If your skin is very sensitive, choose Edith or Hendrix.
Can wool blend yarn be washed in the machine?
Yes, with the right care: gentle cycle at 30°, low or no spin, in a mesh laundry bag for delicate items. After washing, reshape the garment by hand and lay it flat to dry — never hang it vertically or it will stretch. Edith and Metallica, with their Mulesing Free merino component, maintain softness and elasticity even after many washes.
How many balls of wool blend yarn do I need for a scarf?
For a standard scarf (around 180cm × 20cm), 1-2 balls of 100g are usually enough. With Edith (300m/100g), 1 ball almost always suffices; with Barry (150m/100g), you'll need 2. For a wide scarf or an infinity scarf, allow for 2-3 balls. Always keep an extra ball from the same dye lot for the finishing touches.
What is the best wool blend yarn for beginners?
Edith is the ideal choice for beginners: 300 metres per 100g, incredibly soft, every stitch clearly visible. Barry is great for anyone who wants fast results with large needles (size 6-8) — the blown yarn is forgiving of tension errors and grows quickly. Both come in dozens of colours and work equally well with knitting needles or a crochet hook.
Is wool blend yarn good for autumn and winter projects?
It's the yarn's golden season: the wool component makes blended yarn warm and thermal, ideal from September through March. For winter, choose the highest wool content — Ringo (50% wool), Metallica (50% virgin wool) or Nirvana (49% merino) for maximum warmth. For in-between seasons, Edith (25% merino) delivers moderate warmth without the weight. In summer the hook doesn't stop, it just moves on to lighter yarns.
