What is lurex and why use it for crochet and knitting?
Lurex is a metallic yarn that adds brilliance and luminosity to any project. It can be used alone as a decorative yarn or paired with other balls as inlay worked in parallel. For crochet and knitting it's very versatile: fine yarns are worked doubled with other balls, thicker ones create self-standing luminous stitches. How do you use inlay lurex: always worked in parallel?
Yes: hold the inlay lurex together with the main ball on the same needle or crochet hook, as if they were a single yarn. You can also use it in sections — only on even rows, only on the border — for partial effects.
Can lurex yarn be machine washed?
It depends on the base yarn it's blended with. Inlay lurex and Grace (chainette) require gentle hand washing in cold water. Bolly, which is superwash, is machine washable at 30° on a delicate cycle. Bucley and Roxy, with a wool component, require hand washing. Always check the product label: the lurex itself is durable, but any wool content may be affected by high temperatures.
What's the difference between lurex yarn and sequin thread?
Lurex is a continuous metallic yarn: the brilliance is uniform along the whole length of the yarn and gives a shimmer or metallic effect on the finished piece. Sequins (like Patsy Naked) are separate discs threaded onto the yarn: each stitch carries a disc that reflects light three-dimensionally and far more dramatically. Lurex is subtle and elegant, sequins make a stronger statement — the choice depends on the effect you're after.
How many balls of lurex yarn do I need for a shawl?
For a standard triangular or rectangular shawl (about 150cm × 50cm) you'll typically use 2-3 balls of lurex yarn at 50g or 1-2 cones of 100g. If you're using inlay lurex alongside another yarn, 1 cone of 100g is enough for nearly the whole project. For sequin thread like Patsy Naked, budget 100g for small accessories and 200-300g for shawls and stoles.
