✨ TESSILAND STUDIOFrequently Asked Questions about Fancy Yarns
What is a fancy yarn?
A fancy yarn is defined not by its fibre but by its visual or tactile effect: colour variation, faux fur, sequins, beads, coloured inserts. We group here all yarn balls with a fashion or decorative feature beyond a plain colour yarn — regardless of fibre composition.
How do you crochet with yarns that have sequins or beads?
The decorations are integrated into the yarn and don't require special techniques. Use a hook of the size indicated on the label and work calmly to avoid catching sequins in the hook. The process is identical to working with a classic yarn.
Do variegated yarns change colour predictably?
Yes: the colour follows a programmed sequence along the skein. The result depends on your stitch count per row. On narrow projects (scarves) the colour shifts quickly; on wide projects (shawls, blankets) the colour bands widen and become more dramatic.
Does faux fur yarn shed fibres over time?
Microfibre faux fur yarns like Dion are structurally stable and do not shed with proper care. Hand wash in cold water or use a delicate machine cycle without spin. Lay flat to dry — avoid the tumble dryer.
Can I combine a fancy yarn with a plain yarn?
Yes, this is one of the most popular combinations. A variegated or sequin yarn alternated with plain rows creates an elegant effect without increasing technical difficulty. Fancy yarns work well both as the main feature or as an "accent" in a two-colour project.
What projects work best with fancy yarns?
It depends on the effect: faux fur and brushed for winter hats and scarves; sequins and beads for evening accessories and clutch bags; variegated for shawls and blankets where the colour play develops across the whole surface. Yarns with candy inserts work best on simple stitches where the insert stays visible.
