What is mohair and where does it come from?
Mohair is the fibre obtained from the Angora goat, a breed originating from Anatolia (Turkey). The name derives from the Arabic word "mukhayyar", meaning "selected goat hair". It is considered one of the most prized natural fibres for its lustre, lightness and softness. South Africa, Texas and Lesotho are today the main world producers. Our Tessiland mohair blends combine this fibre with wool or acrylic to make it more accessible and easier to work with.
Does mohair yarn itch?
Quality mohair does not itch — the fibre is finer and smoother than regular wool. Superkid mohair (from the kid goat at first shearing) is the least irritating of all. The "scratchy" feeling some people notice with pile yarns is often caused by fibre ends that protrude: with brushed mohair the pile is longer and softer, and the ends don't prick. If you are sensitive to wool, test a swatch on the inside of your wrist before using it near your neck.
How do you wash mohair yarn garments?
Mohair is best washed by hand in cold water with a gentle wool detergent, or machine washed at 30°C on a wool/delicate cycle. Never wring the wet garment: gently squeeze it wrapped in a towel and lay it flat on a surface to dry. Mohair tends to felt if agitated in hot water. To revive the pile after washing, gently run a fabric brush over the garment while it is still slightly damp.
