✨ TESSILAND STUDIOFrequently Asked Questions about Alpaca Wool
How much does alpaca wool cost?
The price of alpaca wool varies according to the percentage of fibre in the blend and the spinning technique. At Tessiland, Gloria, the entry-level alpaca blend, starts from €3.50 per ball (50g · 150m); PresleyEvo and Sleepy, with special effects (micro beads or sequins), cost €4.90; Armstrong Baby Alpaca air-blown — the top range with 72% Baby Alpaca — is €5.90 for 50g. Buying directly from the manufacturer saves you money compared to traditional retail prices.
Is alpaca wool warmer than traditional wool?
Yes. Alpaca fibre has a partially hollow internal structure that retains heat better than sheep's wool, providing superior thermal insulation at the same weight. This makes it particularly appreciated for lightweight yet very warm winter garments, like the Armstrong and Moby air-blown yarns.
Does alpaca wool itch?
Comfort depends on the fibre fineness and length, not the animal of origin. Alpaca, and Baby Alpaca in particular (as in Armstrong), is among the finest fibres available: it doesn't itch even on sensitive skin. Alpaca blend yarns like Gloria, with a synthetic component, also maintain excellent comfort thanks to the Baby Alpaca percentage in the blend.
What does 'Baby Alpaca' mean?
'Baby Alpaca' refers to a particularly fine and soft alpaca fibre — typically obtained from the first shearing or from the selection of the finest fibres. It doesn't refer to the animal's age, but to the fineness of the fibre expressed in microns. The lower the micron count, the softer and more precious the yarn: Armstrong is composed of 72% Baby Alpaca, making it one of the softest yarns in the catalogue.
How many balls do you need for an alpaca wool scarf?
For a standard scarf (approximately 180cm × 20cm), 2-3 balls of 50g are generally enough. With Gloria (150m/50g), 2 balls are often sufficient; with Armstrong (120m/50g) or Moby (90m/50g), count 2-3. For a more voluminous infinity scarf or a wide scarf, go up to 3-4 balls. Always buy one extra ball from the same dye lot for finishing.
Can alpaca wool be machine washed?
With the right precautions, yes. Delicate cycle at 30°, no spin or very low spin, in a mesh bag. Alpaca wool is naturally lanolin-free, so it's less prone to felting than sheep's wool — but heat and friction remain the main enemies. Hand washing in warm water remains the safest choice to extend the life of the garment.
