Frequently Asked Questions about DIY Thermal Pillows
How many cherry pits do I need to make a thermal pillow?
For a standard neck pillow (about 30×20 cm) you need 400-500 g of cherry pits. For a larger back pillow (40×30 cm) calculate 800 g-1 kg. The 1 kg pack of Tessiland cherry pits is designed to make one complete pillow with a little left over to adjust the density.
What is the difference between a cherry pit pillow and a flax seed pillow?
Cherry pits retain heat longer and are ideal for extended compresses on the neck and shoulders. Flax seeds are softer and lighter, perfect for multi-purpose pillows (both hot and cold). Both heat in the microwave in 2-3 minutes and cool in the freezer.
Can I add lavender to cherry pits for an aromatic pillow?
Yes — just add a tablespoon of lavender flowers to the cherry pit or flax seed filling. Microwave heat intensifies the natural scent for an immediate aromatherapy effect. Tessiland sells lavender and cherry pits separately so you can adjust the intensity to your liking.
What fabric should I use for the thermal pillow cover?
Use compact cotton or untreated natural wool: they keep cherry pits and seeds from escaping and are microwave-safe. Avoid synthetic fibres when heating. Include a zip or envelope closure (flap) so you can empty the filling before washing the cover.
