How to choose the right needle for hand needlework
The right needle depends on three things: the type of project, the yarn or thread, and the technique. Here's how to choose:
- Seaming knit or crochet pieces: use a yarn needle with wide eye and blunt tip — see yarn needles.
- Embroidery on fabric or canvas: embroidery needle with long eye and sharp point — see embroidery needles.
- Hand sewing and darning: assorted kits fine-to-medium sizes with or without threader — see sewing needles.
- Threading elastic, ribbon or tape: ribbon needle with large eye and flat body — see ribbon needles.
- Upholstery, leather, felt and stiff materials: specialty needles with triangular or curved point — see specialty needles.
Size matters: how to read yarn needle numbers
Yarn needle packs always show a number: it indicates the needle's length and diameter. The higher the number, the finer and shorter the needle. Practical rule: match the needle size to the yarn weight on the ball band.
- No.14–16 (60–55 mm, ø 1.9–1.6 mm): for chunky yarn, t-shirt yarn, bulky weight.
- No.18–20 (50–43 mm, ø 1.2–1.0 mm): most common — for medium weight yarn and combed cotton.
- No.22–24 (40–37 mm, ø 0.9–0.8 mm): for fine yarn, crochet cotton, nylon.
- No.26 (34 mm, ø 0.6 mm): ultra-fine, for embroidery thread and precision work on tight weaves.
BUYER'S GUIDE: which needle for which project
Three questions to find the right needle in 30 seconds.
1. What kind of project are you working on?
- Knitting or crochet finishing → Yarn needles (wide eye, blunt or sharp tip)
- Hand embroidery → Embroidery needles (long eye, fine point)
- Hand sewing or darning → Sewing needles (sharp point, fine sizes)
- Upholstery, needle felting, leather → Specialty needles
2. Blunt or sharp tip?
- Blunt (tapestry): for working through existing stitches — won't split the yarn
- Sharp (pointed): for piercing through fabric, canvas, felt — penetrates the material
3. Professional brand or assorted kit?
- Prym: the professional choice — quality steel, golden eye, precise sizes that last
- Assorted kits: ideal for beginners or anyone wanting to cover multiple needs in one pack
Frequently asked questions about sewing and embroidery needles
What is the difference between a yarn needle and an embroidery needle?
A yarn needle has a wide eye for bulky yarn and often a blunt tip that slides between stitches without splitting them. An embroidery needle has a long but narrower eye designed for embroidery threads like DMC Mouliné, and a sharp point that passes through fabric precisely. They are not interchangeable: using the wrong needle can fray the thread or distort the work.
How do I choose the right yarn needle size?
The number indicates length and diameter: the higher the number, the finer the needle. For chunky yarn and t-shirt yarn use no.14–16; for medium weight yarn and combed cotton no.18–20; for fine yarn and nylon no.22–26. When in doubt, choose the number closest to the yarn weight shown on the ball band.
What are ribbon needles and when do you use them?
Ribbon needles have a very large eye and a flat or tubular body, designed to thread elastic bands, ribbons and cords through hems and channels. Use them for bag drawstrings, waistbands in knitwear, casing in skirts or trousers. Also essential in crochet bags where the strap needs to be threaded through rings.
Are hand-sewing needles different from machine needles?
Yes, completely different and not interchangeable. Machine needles have a flat side on the shank, a lateral groove and the eye near the point — they fit a specific mechanism and vary by fabric type and size. Hand-sewing needles have the eye at the top and a uniform shank. Using a machine needle by hand — or vice versa — simply does not work.
