Golden eye needles: less friction, faster sewing
The golden eye on Prym needles reduces thread friction, makes threading easy even with fine thread and keeps the thread in position during sewing. Available in assorted sizes (N.1–N.9) to suit any fabric weight and thread thickness.
Needle threader: the trick that saves time
The needle threader is the accessory many overlook and then can't do without. The Prym LED model lights up the eye and threads the needle in a second, even in low-light conditions or with very small needles.

How do I choose the right hand sewing needles?
The choice of sewing needle depends on your fabric and the type of stitch:
- Lightweight fabrics (cotton, silk, linen): medium needles size N.7–9, classic sharp tip.
- Jersey, knit and stretch fabrics: ballpoint needles — they don't split the threads of elastic fabric.
- Darning and repairs: long needles N.3–5 or specific darning needles, with a wide eye to carry double or thick thread.
- Leather and tough materials: triangular-point needles that pierce without tearing.
How do you darn a garment by hand?
Hand darning requires a long needle with a wide eye (to carry double or thick thread) and a thread as close as possible to the original. The basic technique: stretch the fabric over a curved surface (darning mushroom), weave horizontal threads across the damaged area then vertical threads in a criss-cross pattern, creating a woven patch that replaces the broken fabric. For knitwear and wool socks, a blunt darning needle is preferable to avoid splitting the warp threads.
SELECTION GUIDE: which sewing needle to choose
Three criteria to find the right needle without hesitation.
1. Fabric type
- Woven fabrics (cotton, linen, silk): medium or long needle with classic tip
- Jersey, knit, stretch: ballpoint needle
- Leather and heavy canvas: triangular-point needle
2. Use
- Classic sewing and quick repairs: assorted set sizes N.5–9
- Darning and heavy-duty sewing: long needles N.3–5
- Emergency sewing: pre-threaded needles ready to use
3. Must-have accessories
- LED needle threader: essential for anyone with visual difficulties or working with small needles
- Thimble: for pushing the needle through thick fabrics without hurting yourself
Frequently asked questions about sewing needles
What is the difference between sewing needles and darning needles?
Classic sewing needles are medium-size, with a sharp point and a small eye — designed for sewing with a single thread on woven fabrics. Darning needles are longer, with a larger eye to carry double or thick thread, and may have a blunt tip to avoid splitting the threads of the fabric being repaired.
What does "golden eye" mean on Prym needles?
The golden eye is treated with a coating that reduces friction between the thread and the edge of the hole. This makes threading easier (the thread slides in instead of slipping away), reduces thread wear during sewing and protects even the most delicate threads. It is a distinctive feature of the premium Prym range.
Can I use hand sewing needles for leather?
For leather you need triangular-point (glover's) needles: they pierce leather cleanly without tearing it, unlike standard needles which would struggle to penetrate and risk damaging the material. Find Prym leather needles in the dedicated section of the catalogue.
How does the LED needle threader work?
The Prym LED threader has a small light that illuminates the needle eye when you press the button. Insert the metal tip into the lit eye, slide the thread into the guide slot and press: the internal mechanism pushes the thread through the eye in a single motion. Works with sewing, embroidery and yarn needles from size N.1 to N.9.
