How to Use Faux Fur
Faux fur with knit backing works like fabric: cut with scissors on the knit side (never from the pile side — it would damage it), position it on the surface to decorate and sew by hand with a needle and strong thread or by machine with a long stitch. Here are the three main uses:
For bag and hood trims → cut the strip to the length of the edge, fold it in half lengthways and sew the knit side along the edge of the bag or hood. The pile falls naturally, covering the seam.
For covering surfaces → place the strip with the knit side down, pin in place and sew along the edges. For large surfaces (bags, panels) use the 150 cm strip. For finishes and details, the 120 cm or short pile (7 cm) variants are enough.
For pom poms → nothing to cut: the pom pom comes ready-made. Just pass a strong thread through the loop and sew it to the desired spot — or snap it on with a press stud (so it can be removed for washing). For a permanent fix, sew with 4-5 stitches through the loop.

3. What look?

How do you sew faux fur onto a bag?
Place the strip with the knit side facing the bag, pin in place and sew with a needle and strong thread using backstitch. For trims along the opening, fold the strip in half and sew the knit edge. By machine: use a jeans needle (size 90-100) and a long stitch (3.5-4 mm). Always cut from the knit side with sharp scissors, never from the pile side.
Can you wash faux fur?
Yes, but only by hand in cold water with mild soap. Do not machine wash — the mechanical agitation tangles the pile and can distort the knit backing. After washing, blot with a towel and lay flat to dry. Once dry, gently brush the pile with a soft brush to reopen it. For pom poms: detach before washing the garment (if snap-fastened) or wash the garment alone while protecting the pom pom in a mesh bag.
What is the difference between 7 cm and 14 cm pile?
The difference is in the pile height, not the strip width. The 7 cm pile gives a more contained finish: ideal for cuffs, fine edges and details on small accessories. The 14 cm pile creates a full, bold fur effect: perfect for trims on large bags, hoods and coat collars. The knit backing is identical in both cases — same cutting and sewing method.
Can I use faux fur with a sewing machine?
Yes, the knit backing lends itself to machine sewing. Use a jeans or universal needle size 90-100, a straight stitch at 3.5-4 mm length and moderate speed. Always sew from the knit side (pile facing down against the machine bed). If the pile is very long (14 cm), it may help to fold it upwards with your fingers as you sew, to stop it catching in the presser foot. For double thickness (e.g. knit backing + bag fabric), check that the presser foot can handle the bulk.
