Rigid Crochet Bag Handles: Screw Closure and Sizing Guide
Rigid crochet bag handles are the most practical solution for structured medium and large bags. The screw closure in two parts lets you mount the handle directly through the stitches of the top edge, without additional holes: it screws from the inside, provides a solid grip and is easy to dismantle. For medium-sized bags (base 30–35 cm), handles of 20–28 cm are the standard size; for larger bags choose 32–40 cm to maintain correct proportions. Carabiners and bag hooks complete the set for adding a shoulder strap.
Unique and Jewel Handles: The Tessiland Color Match System
Looking for unique bag handles that perfectly match your projects? Tessiland's Color Match system guarantees perfect chromatic correspondence between handles, eco-leather bases, closures and Made in Italy yarns. From jewel handles with pearlescent and metallic effects to modern geometric shapes, new arrivals come every week. Our personalised assistance helps you choose the most suitable sizes and combinations for your project.
Handles for Handmade Bags: How to Choose the Material
For handmade crochet bags, the handle determines the final style almost as much as the yarn. Quick guide: resin and bamboo for spring/summer bags and natural looks; metal and chains for evening bags and modern looks; wood for a warm artisan touch; eco-leather for the most refined look. In all cases, base and handle should come from the same range for compatible holes and colour matching. For interchangeable straps, carabiners and bag hooks are the key accessory.
BUYING GUIDE: How to navigate the catalogue
Choosing the right handle means considering style, bag dimensions and the fixing system.
1. How to Choose the Handle for Your Bag Type
- Structured medium/large bag: rigid screw-close handles (bamboo, resin or wood) — mount by screwing the two parts through the stitches without piercing
- Soft or draped bag: eco-leather or fabric handles with side rings — fixed by sewing or carabiner
- Evening bag: jewel handles in resin with pearlescent or metallic effects, or gold/silver chain straps
- Versatile bag with strap: short handles + carabiners for interchangeable shoulder strap
2. Matching Handles and Bases
- Eco-leather bases: perfect with Color Match handles in eco-leather or fabric with metal details
- Pre-drilled bases: compatible with rigid handles in bamboo, resin and wood — check the hole spacing
- Proportions: handle width should not exceed base width; for medium bags choose handles of 20–28 cm
- Color Match: coordinate handles, bases and accessories in the same shade for professional results
3. Interchangeable Handles and Straps
- Carabiner systems: allow you to swap handles and straps for any occasion — see carabiners and bag hooks
- Decorative chains: transform a casual bag into an elegant evening accessory
- Adjustable straps: add functionality and comfort to your handmade creations
- Mix of materials: rigid handles + fabric strap for original and practical solutions
4. Handle Care and Maintenance
- Bamboo and wood: wipe with a dry cloth, avoid prolonged moisture
- Metal: polish with a soft cloth to maintain the shiny finish
- Resin: resistant and easy to clean, keeps colour and shine unchanged
- Eco-leather and fabric: protect from heat sources, clean gently with a damp cloth

✨ Tessiland Studio — Calculate and SubstituteFrequently Asked Questions
What are the best crochet bag handles for beginners?
For beginners, rigid resin handles are ideal: lightweight, durable and available in many colours. They pair easily with Tessiland pre-drilled bases and require no complex work. Alternatively, bamboo handles offer a natural, elegant look, perfect for simple but striking projects. Both types use a screw closure and deliver professional results even on first creations.
How does the screw closure on crochet bag handles work?
Tessiland rigid handles consist of two parts that screw together: the front part is inserted through the stitches of the bag's top edge, the back part screws from the inside locking everything in place without glue or sewing. The system provides a solid grip and allows the handle to be removed if needed. There is no need to pierce the crochet work: simply separate existing stitches at the desired position.
Can I use interchangeable handles on crochet bags?
Yes, handles with carabiners are perfect for crochet bags and offer maximum versatility. You can alternate short handles for carrying by hand with straps and bag hooks for shoulder carry, or replace casual handles with elegant chains for the evening. Prepare the appropriate rings or eyelets during the crochet work for a secure and functional attachment.
How long should handles be for a crochet bag?
Length depends on intended use and bag size. For medium-sized handbags (base 30–35 cm), handles of 20–28 cm are the standard. For large bags or shoppers, choose 32–40 cm. For shoulder bags, use short handles with an interchangeable strap. Our personalised assistance is available to recommend the most suitable sizes for your specific project.
Which handles should I choose for elegant evening bags?
For elegant evening bags, jewel handles in resin with pearlescent or metallic effects and chains with gold or silver details are the perfect choice. Tessiland® fabric handles with metal inserts also offer Made in Italy refinement. Pair them with Color Match eco-leather bases and coordinated closures for a sophisticated result. Interchangeable chain straps with gold carabiners transform any bag into an evening accessory.
How do I match Color Match handles with eco-leather bases?
Tessiland's Color Match system guarantees perfect chromatic correspondence between components. Choose eco-leather or fabric handles from the same Color Match line as your base: you will find the coordinated shades in the dedicated section. The system also extends to closures, linings and Made in Italy yarns like Sublime and Pandoro Queen, letting you create perfectly harmonised bags without guesswork.
