Circular Knitting Needles: Fixed, Interchangeable Sets
Quick summary: At Tessiland you'll find circular knitting needles in two systems: fixed-cable needles (all-in-one, your size, ready to use) and interchangeable sets (tips and cables sold separately, maximum flexibility for all your projects). Available in metal, wood and bamboo. Complete with cables, connectors and dedicated needle cases.
Circular Knitting Needles
Circular needles — also called circular knitting needles or round needles — are the go-to tool for knitting in the round without seams: seamless sweaters, hats, socks and tube garments come together much faster than with straight needles. Unlike straights, circular needles hold all the stitches on the flexible cable rather than in your hands — you'll feel the difference in your shoulders and wrists within minutes. Tessiland stocks the leading brands (KnitPro, Prym) in metal, wood and bamboo, in both fixed circular needles and interchangeable sets.
The right choice comes down to two things: how many projects you run at once (if just one, a fixed needle is fine; if you always have multiple things on the go, an interchangeable set pays for itself quickly) and tip material (metal is slippier, wood and bamboo grip the yarn slightly — better for chunky wool or mohair). The buying guide at the bottom of this page gets you to the right size in 2 minutes.
Fixed Circular Needles — Choose the Size, Knit Right Away
Tip and cable already joined: choose the size (e.g. 4 mm) and cable length (40, 60, 80 cm) and the needle is ready. Ideal for knitters who work on one project at a time or are trying circular needles for the first time. Nothing to assemble.
Interchangeable Sets — Buy Once, Knit Forever
Tips and cables sold separately: pick the tip for your project and the cable length you need. One KnitPro set covers 7-10 different sizes with 2-3 cables — costs more upfront, but replaces 15-20 fixed needles. The right investment for regular knitters.

Interchangeable Circular Needles: Tips, Cables and Connectors
Interchangeable circular needles work in modules: tips (the pointed parts, in sizes from 2 to 15 mm) screw onto cables (which set the working length: 40, 60, 80 cm and longer). Connectors join two cables to create custom lengths — useful for blankets, large shawls and circular projects wider than 60 cm in diameter.

BUYING GUIDE: circular knitting needles
Three questions, three minutes: find the right needle for your project straight away.
1. Fixed or Interchangeable?
- Fixed: tip and cable already joined in one size. Choose the needle size (e.g. 4 mm) and cable length (40, 60 or 80 cm). Perfect for knitters who work on one project at a time or are trying circular needles for the first time. Nothing to assemble
- Interchangeable: separate tips and cables to screw together. A set of 7-10 sizes with 2-3 cables replaces 15-20 fixed needles and adapts to any project. The right investment for regular knitters working on multiple things at once
2. Metal, Wood or Bamboo?
- Metal (KnitPro, Prym): tips glide fast — ideal for cotton, acrylic, fine wool and smooth yarns. Stitches move on their own, your pace is quicker
- Wood and Bamboo (KnitPro Prym): a slight natural grip slows the yarn down — ideal for chunky wool, mohair, alpaca and any yarn that tends to slip off. Hands tire less during long sessions
3. Which Cable Length?
- 40 cm: hats, socks, separate sleeves, projects with few stitches
- 60 cm: the sweet spot — bodices, tops, short skirts. The most versatile cable in the kit
- 80 cm and longer: sweaters, cardigans, blankets, large shawls. For stitch-heavy projects or magic loop technique

What's the difference between fixed and interchangeable circular needles?
Fixed circular needles have tip and cable joined in one piece: choose the size (e.g. 4 mm) and length (40, 60 or 80 cm) and the needle is ready. Interchangeable circular needles have separate tips and cables that screw together: a set of 8-10 sizes covers the full range and you can swap cable lengths in seconds. If you knit one project at a time, fixed needles are enough; if you regularly work on multiple things, an interchangeable set pays for itself after 3-4 purchases.
What are circular knitting needles used for, and when should I use them instead of straight needles?
Circular needles let you knit in the round without seams (sweaters, hats, socks, tube garments) but also flat like straight needles — holding all stitches on the flexible cable instead of in your hands. Use them instead of straights when the project is wide (blankets, shawls with lots of stitches), when you want to avoid side seams, or simply to avoid straining your shoulders and wrists during long knitting sessions.
What size circular needles should I choose?
The size (needle number, e.g. 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm) depends on the yarn and tension stated on the ball band or in the pattern. As a general guide: fine yarns (fingering weight wool, sport cotton) need 2-3.5 mm needles; DK or worsted weight 3.5-5 mm; chunky and super-bulky from 6 mm up. Without a pattern, start with the size shown on the ball band and knit a 10×10 cm swatch to check your tension.
Are metal or wooden circular needles better?
It depends on the yarn. Metal is smoother: stitches glide fast, ideal for cotton, acrylic and smooth wools — great for knitters who work at pace. Wood and bamboo have a slight natural grip that slows the yarn: ideal for chunky wool, mohair and alpaca that tend to slip off the tips. Many experienced knitters own both: metal for fast projects, wood for delicate or slippery fibres.
How do I use short circular needles (40 cm)?
Short circular needles (40 cm) are used for projects with few stitches on a small circumference: bottom-up hats, two-at-a-time socks, cuffs and separate sleeves. When the stitch count is too low for a 60-80 cm cable (stitches get "lost" on the cord), short circulars are the natural solution. Alternatively, with any cable length, you can use the magic loop technique — a single 80 cm needle works on small circumferences too.
