Wooden & Bamboo Circular Needles — KnitPro, Prym
Quick overview: Tessiland's wooden and bamboo circular needles are circular knitting needles in natural materials: Japanese bamboo Prym (fixed cable, 2.5 to 10 mm) and KnitPro Symfonie interchangeable sets in wood (tips from 3.5 to 10 mm + cables from 60 to 120 cm). More grip than metal, lightweight and warm to the touch — the ideal choice for slippery yarns and long knitting sessions. Metal circulars are in the metal circular needles section.
Wooden and bamboo circular needles are the choice for knitters who want comfort, lightness and a natural grip that holds the yarn without slowing it down. Japanese bamboo and treated wood offer a warm, slightly porous surface: stitches stay in place, they don't slide off — a decisive advantage with slippery yarns like silk, viscose, bamboo and mercerised cotton. Tessiland offers two complementary ranges: Prym Japanese bamboo circular needles with fixed cable (ready to use, 2.5 to 10 mm) and KnitPro Symfonie interchangeable sets in natural wood (modular tips + cables of variable length).
Why choose wood and bamboo? The answer lies in the knitting feel and the yarn type. Bamboo needles are quieter, warmer under the fingers and don't tire the hands like metal during long sessions. The natural grip eliminates the need to tension the yarn — the stitch stays where it is without slipping away. For those who knit fast or use yarns that drag too much on wood (acrylic, bulky wool), the sister metal circular needles section offers more glide.
Japanese Bamboo Prym — Fixed Cable, Ready to Use
Circular needles with tip and cable in one piece: nothing to assemble, no risk of unscrewing. High-quality Japanese bamboo, lightweight and flexible. Sizes from 2.5 to 10 mm, lengths 40, 60 and 80 cm. The most immediate choice for those who want to start knitting straight away.
KnitPro Symfonie Set — Interchangeable Wood Tips
Tips in multilaminated rosewood with coloured grain: they screw onto KnitPro cables to create the circular needle of the length you need. Complete sets with tips, cables from 60 to 120 cm, end caps and case. The modular system for those who want a kit that grows with their projects.

Wood and Bamboo: When to Choose Natural Materials
Wooden and bamboo circular needles are the first choice in three specific situations. First: slippery yarns — silk, viscose, bamboo and mercerised cotton tend to slide off metal needles, while wood's natural grip holds them in place without needing to tension the yarn with your fingers. Second: long sessions — wood doesn't chill the hands, makes no metallic noise and weighs less than brass. Third: joint problems — the cushioning surface reduces the vibrations that rigid needles transmit to wrists and fingers.
When to choose metal? If you knit fast and want stitches to fly without resistance, if you use yarns that tend to catch on wood fibres (mohair, bouclé), or if you work large gauges where metal's rigidity helps maintain rhythm. The metal section has the full KnitPro Nova and Zing range.

Three questions to choose the right natural-material circular needle for your project.
1. Japanese bamboo Prym or KnitPro Symfonie wood?
- Japanese bamboo Prym (fixed cable): tip and cable in one piece — ready to use, no assembly. Light, flexible bamboo with medium-high grip. The most practical and accessible choice: pick your size and length, and start knitting immediately. Ideal for those working on one or two projects at a time
- KnitPro Symfonie (interchangeable): multilaminated rosewood tips that screw onto KnitPro cables — a modular system where the same pair of tips works with cables of different lengths. Slightly less grip than bamboo but with a finish that improves over time. Ideal for those who want a complete, versatile kit covering every project
2. Which cable length to choose?
- 40 cm: hats, cowls, wrist warmers — projects with 36-40 cm circumference. The minimum length for knitting in the round without magic loop
- 60 cm: the all-rounder — jumper bodies, small blankets, projects with 50-60 cm circumference. The best-selling size
- 80 cm: blankets, shawls and large-size jumpers. Long enough for magic loop on small circumferences
- 100-120 cm (Symfonie set only): oversized blankets, shawls and magic loop for socks and sleeves. Two rounds of cable for the most ambitious projects
3. Which yarns are they best for?
- Slippery yarns (silk, viscose, bamboo, mercerised cotton): wood/bamboo grip holds the yarn without tension — the stitch doesn't escape. Here natural material clearly beats metal
- Standard wool and blends: work well on both materials — the choice becomes personal comfort (warmth and silence of wood vs speed of metal)
- Mohair, bouclé, fuzzy yarns: metal is better — wood's porous surface can snag fibres and slow the work down

✨ Tessiland Studio — Circular Needle TutorialsFrequently asked questions
What's the difference between bamboo and metal circular needles?
The main difference is in the surface: bamboo offers natural grip (yarn doesn't slide off), warmth to the touch and silence — ideal for smooth yarns and long sessions. Metal offers an ultra-smooth surface and maximum glide — ideal for fast knitters and yarns that drag. Bamboo is also lighter and doesn't chill the hands in winter. For those with joint issues, bamboo transmits fewer vibrations.
Are KnitPro Symfonie wood tips compatible with KnitPro metal cables?
Yes, all KnitPro interchangeable tips (Symfonie in wood, Nova in metal, coloured Zing) use the same thread and are compatible with all standard KnitPro cables. You can mount a Symfonie wood tip on a cable purchased with a Nova set with no issues — the system is designed to be modular and interchangeable across ranges.
Do Prym bamboo circular needles have interchangeable tips?
No, Prym Japanese bamboo circular needles have a fixed cable — tip and cable are one piece, they don't separate. The advantage is simplicity: no risk of unscrewing during work, no extra accessories to buy. If you want the interchangeable system in natural material, KnitPro Symfonie sets in wood offer screw-on tips compatible with all KnitPro cables.
Do bamboo needles wear out with use?
Japanese bamboo and KnitPro multilaminated wood are treated to last. With use, the surface polishes further and improves — it becomes smoother without losing grip. Avoid leaving them in very humid environments or in contact with water: wood can warp. Otherwise, no maintenance required — the more you use them, the better they work.
