✨ TESSILAND STUDIOFrequently Asked Questions about Cotton Yarn
What is the best cotton for a summer crochet top?
For a summer top, mercerized cotton (Iggy) is the best choice: the sheen enhances the open lace stitches typical of summer tops, the wash resistance means the garment lasts over time and colours stay vibrant after many washes. If you prefer a more matte, natural look, pure cotton Donny is equally suitable — slightly softer and easier to work with for beginners. Use a 2.5-3mm hook for either.
What is the difference between combed cotton and mercerized cotton?
Combed cotton is cotton processed to remove short fibres and make the yarn more consistent — it's the base of Donny. Mercerized cotton is combed cotton that has undergone an additional chemical treatment (with caustic soda under tension): this makes it shinier, stronger, with better colour penetration and greater resistance to shrinkage. Mercerized cotton (Iggy) costs a little more but lasts longer and has a more polished look on the finished piece.
How many balls of cotton yarn do I need for a crochet bag?
For a small bag (compact tote bag) you'll need 2-3 balls of 100g or 4-5 of 50g of N3 cotton. For a medium bag with a base, count on 3-4 balls of 100g. If you use cotton-linen (Lynyrd, 100g) or chunky cotton (Iggy XXL), you use fewer metres but more grams per volume — budget 200-400g in total depending on size either way. Safest approach: test your tension with a swatch and measure how many cm² you get from 10g.
Can cotton yarn be machine washed?
Yes — cotton is one of the easiest fibres to wash. Donny, Iggy, Drake and Iggy XXL are all machine washable at 30-40° on a delicate cycle. Mercerized cotton (Iggy) is even more stable and holds up better through repeated washes. Bamboo (Isac) washes at 30° on delicate. Cotton-linen (Lynyrd) is washable at 30° but may shrink slightly: if your project needs to hold precise measurements, pre-wash your swatch before you start.
What does "cotton blend" mean and when should I use it?
A cotton blend combines cotton fibre with another natural or synthetic fibre — linen, viscose, bamboo, wool or lurex — to modify its properties. Cotton-linen (Lynyrd) is stiffer and more structured. Cotton-viscose is more fluid and lustrous. Cotton-lurex adds sparkle. The rule: choose the blend based on the quality you want to add to the base cotton. If plain cotton works for you, use it; if you need something extra, look at the specific blend for that quality.
Is bamboo a good alternative to cotton for summer crochet?
Yes, with a few important differences. Bamboo (Isac) is even cooler than cotton because the fibre is naturally thermoregulating and absorbs moisture better. It's also silky to the touch — the finished piece has a softer, more fluid drape than cotton. The drawback: it's slightly more slippery to work with (the hook tends to slip out of stitches) and may stretch slightly after washing. It's the ideal choice for garments worn directly against sensitive skin, including babies.
