How to Attach Wooden Handles to Your Bag
The attachment method depends on the handle shape:
Handles with hole or eyelet (Batavia, Pacaja, Luna, Leuk): pass the bag fabric through the handle hole, fold it inward, and sew with a firm stitch. The weight of the bag keeps the join secure.
Handles with slot (Ebony): slide the edge of the crochet fabric directly into the groove — the fabric stays locked by friction. For extra security, add a few stitches at the ends.
Circular and compact handles (Circular, Pitinga, Square): wrap the fabric around the handle with a round of single crochet or secure with cord and rings. The circular handle becomes part of the bag structure.
BUYING GUIDE: wooden handles
Two questions to choose the right handle.
1. What shape?
- Arched (Batavia, Pacaja, Chico): classic rounded profile — the most versatile choice for medium and large bags
- Rectangular (Square, Egypt): square profile — for bags with a modern, structured design
- Circular: full ring — the handle becomes part of the bag structure
- Slotted (Ebony): fabric slides into the groove — no stitched attachment needed
- Cane & wood (Kampong, Sesan, Sakai, Nara, Leuk): natural cane wrapping — boho and artisan style
2. What size?
- 13–15 cm (Pitinga, Circular, Nara): for small bags, clutches, and small shoppers
- 18–21 cm (Pacaja, Square, Luna, Sakai): for medium bags and tote bags
- 25–28 cm (Batavia, Egypt, Ebony, Sesan, Leuk): for large, roomy bags
The handle size determines the width of the bag opening — choose it before you start your project.
Frequently asked questions
Which wooden handle is best for a crochet bag?
It depends on the bag type. For a shopper or tote bag you need wide arched handles (25–28 cm) like Batavia or Egypt — they bear the weight and offer a comfortable grip. For a medium bag, the rectangular format (Square 20×10) or circular (15 cm) adds more structure. For a boho, natural look, the cane & wood handles (Kampong, Sesan) pair beautifully with raffia and natural cotton yarns.
How do you attach a wooden handle to a handmade bag?
The most common method: pass the bag fabric through the handle hole, fold the edge inward (2–3 cm), and sew firmly with a yarn needle. For slotted handles (Ebony type) the fabric slides directly into the groove and stays locked by friction. In both cases the attachment is permanent and holds the weight of a full bag.
