Prym Elastic Ribbon Threader Needles
Quick guide: Prym ribbon threading needles are used to thread elastic and ribbons through channels in bags, skirts, trousers and garments. Available in steel and plastic with a perlon eye, rounded tip to avoid piercing the fabric. Ideal for crochet projects with ribbon and for repairing damaged drawstring channels.
The ribbon threading needle is an indispensable tool for anyone working with crochet bags, elasticated skirts, drawstring trousers or garments with decorative ribbons: it allows you to thread ribbons and elastic through channels in seconds, without the frustration of using a safety pin. Tessiland stocks the Prym line with steel and plastic models for every type of ribbon.

Steel or plastic: which to choose?
Steel needles are more rigid and durable: ideal for narrow ribbons, tight elastic and long channels where you need to push with force. Plastic needles with perlon eye are softer and more flexible, perfect for wide ribbons and decorative tapes that must not deform.
The perlon eye: for wide ribbons
The perlon eye (reinforced plastic) of ribbon threading needles is much larger than that of standard sewing needles: it easily accommodates ribbons 1 to 3 cm wide without folding them. The lateral press-to-close fastener holds the ribbon in place during its journey through the channel.

How to use a ribbon threading needle?
Using a ribbon threading needle is straightforward: thread the end of the ribbon or elastic through the needle's eye (for needles with a side fastener, open it, insert the ribbon and close). Enter the channel from the opening and push the needle through. Keep the other end of the ribbon secured with a safety pin at the opening so it is not pulled into the channel.
- Narrow channel (trousers, lingerie): use the smaller steel needle — more rigid for narrow channels.
- Wide channel (bags, skirts): use the large plastic or perlon needle.
- Crochet ribbon: the coloured 2-in-1 needle is perfect as it also works as a finishing needle.
- Wide elastic: cut the elastic slightly longer than the waistband measurement and overlap the two ends by 2 cm before sewing.
How to choose the right needle size?
The needle should be slightly smaller than the width of the channel: if too large it gets stuck, if too small the ribbon bunches up. Practical rule: measure the channel — a 1 cm channel takes ribbons 0.7–0.8 cm wide; a 2 cm channel takes elastic and ribbons up to 1.5 cm. The Prym 3-piece assorted sets cover the most common sizes.

- 1 to 2 cm: medium perlon needle
- Over 2 cm: large perlon needle or plastic threader
3. Intended use
- Channels and elastic only: assorted perlon set
- Channels + knitting/crochet finishing: coloured 2-in-1 Prym needle
- Professional or frequent use: steel needle for longer durability
Frequently asked questions about ribbon threading needles
What is a ribbon threading needle and what is it used for?
A ribbon threading needle is a tool that allows you to thread ribbons, elastic and cords through the channels of garments and bags quickly and easily. It has a very large eye to accommodate wide ribbons and a rounded tip to avoid piercing the channel fabric. It replaces the safety pin, which tends to open or snag on the fabric.
Can ribbon threading needles be used for crochet bags?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses: many crochet bags with a ribbon base use a tubular opening that requires threading the ribbon through the channel after completing the project. The threading needle makes this immediate. For bags with hand-sewn ribbon handles, a pointed yarn needle is needed instead for edge finishing.
How do you insert ribbon into a threading needle?
For fixed-eye needles: fold the end of the ribbon in half and slide the fold through the eye. For side-fastener needles: open the mechanism, insert the ribbon in the channel and close. For needles with an enlarged perlon eye (cod. 20284), fold the ribbon in half and push the double thickness through the eye — the rounded tip slides without fraying the fabric. For coloured models (cod. 20285), the flat body naturally guides flat elastic too.
What is the difference between the steel needles and the coloured ones?
The steel needles (cod. 20283) are rigid, resist the tension of strong elastic and last for years. The coloured Prym plastic ones (cod. 20285) are lighter with a flat body that does not rotate during passage — ideal for soft and thin ribbons. If you frequently work with bra elastic or garment channels, choose steel; for decorative ribbons and knit tubular, both work well.
