Singer and Universal Sewing Machine Needles
Quick guide: Schmets universal 130/705H needles for domestic sewing machines — Singer, Janome, Brother and Bernette — available in multiple sizes. Original metal and plastic bobbins for Singer and Bernette. Quality spare parts to keep your machine running smoothly.
Sewing machine needles wear out faster than you think: a blunt needle scratches the fabric, skips stitches and breaks thread. Schmets makes universal 130/705H needles in hardened steel compatible with almost all modern domestic machines. Tessiland bobbins are original spare parts for Singer and Bernette — a full bobbin means consistent tension and regular stitches.

Universal compatibility
Schmets 130/705H needles fit any domestic machine using this standard — Singer, Janome, Brother, Pfaff, Husqvarna, Bernina and many others. Just check the code on the original packaging.
Change often
A needle should be replaced every 8-10 hours of sewing. Bobbins wear out silently — a scratched bobbin creates uneven tension even with a new needle. Keeping spares avoids stopping mid-project.

Schmets Universal Needles 130/705H — the standard replacement
Schmets universal needles in hardened steel with code 130/705H: the format used by almost all modern domestic machines. Slightly rounded conical tip that slides between fabric threads without fraying them. Available in sizes from 70 for fine fabrics to 110 for denim and canvas. Replacing them regularly solves 90% of sewing problems.
Metal Bobbins — for Singer, Bernette and compatible machines
Low-profile metal bobbins for Singer and Bernette machines with horizontal drop-in system. Metal ensures more even thread winding than plastic and longer lasting — less tension variation, more regular stitches. Check your bobbin diameter before purchasing.
Plastic Bobbins — Singer low-profile replacement
Transparent plastic bobbins for Singer machines with low-profile oscillating hook — the most common system on domestic Singers for the last 30 years. The transparent plastic lets you see how much thread is left without opening the bobbin compartment. Keeping spares avoids stopping mid-project.
Everything you need for your sewing machine
How to choose sewing machine needles?
To choose the right sewing machine needles, you need two pieces of information: your machine's needle code (almost always 130/705H for domestic machines) and the size calibrated to fabric thickness:
- Size 70: silk, chiffon, organza
- Size 80: lightweight cotton, fine linen, thin jersey
- Size 90: medium cotton, poplin, shirt fabrics
- Size 100-110: denim, canvas, tailoring, synthetic leather
What does 130/705H mean on sewing machine needles?
The code 130/705H identifies the international standard for domestic machine needles: 130 indicates total length (13 mm), 705 is the construction family code, H stands for "Haushalts" (German for domestic sewing machine). It guarantees compatibility with any modern domestic machine using it — Singer, Janome, Brother, Pfaff, Bernina, Husqvarna from the late 1970s to today. Schmets needles are made in Belgium in high-resistance hardened steel: the tip holds its profile longer, fewer frayed fabrics and fewer skipped stitches.
Replacement guide — needles and bobbins for sewing machines
1. When to change the needle
- Every 8-10 hours of active sewing, or after each major project.
- Signs of a worn needle: thread breaking, skipped stitches, small "clicks" during sewing.
2. Metal vs plastic bobbin
- Metal: longer lasting, more even tension — ideal for frequent sewers or heavy fabrics.
- Plastic: more economical, transparent (you can see the remaining thread) — great as a spare for occasional use.
3. Singer compatibility
- Plastic bobbins (ref. 20312): Singer 4400, 5400, Heavy Duty, Promise, Talent series — most domestic Singer models from 1970 to today.
- Metal bobbins (ref. 20309): also cover Bernette. For vintage Singer pre-1970, check model specifications.
Frequently asked questions — sewing machine needles and bobbins
Do Schmets 130/705H needles fit my sewing machine?
If your machine is a modern domestic model (Singer, Janome, Brother, Pfaff, Husqvarna, Bernina, Elna, Toyota and most commercial brands), it almost certainly uses the 130/705H format. Check the original needle packaging: if that code appears, Schmets are compatible. The only exceptions are some industrial machines, vintage models pre-1960 and some knitting machines.
How do I know if the bobbin is worn out?
A worn bobbin has small scratches or nicks on its upper edge that cause uneven lower thread tension: irregular stitches, frequent tangles under the fabric or thread breaking from below even with correct tension settings. If you've already replaced the needle and adjusted tension without success, the problem is almost always the bobbin.
Can I use any universal bobbin on my Singer?
No — bobbins have different diameters and profiles depending on the bobbin system. Modern domestic Singers use low-profile bobbins with a 20.5 mm diameter: only those will fit. Bobbins with a high profile or different diameter won't fit in the compartment or will cause skipped stitches. Tessiland bobbins ref. 20312 are specific to this Singer format.
How many needles should I keep in stock?
At least 3-5 needles of your most-used size — 80 and 90 cover 90% of projects on standard cotton. If you also work with denim or technical fabrics, keep a few size 100 and 110 on hand. A needle always breaks at the wrong moment: having a replacement ready means never stopping mid-project.
