Pointed: for sewing and finishing
The fine point penetrates the fabric and between stitches easily — ideal for seaming finished pieces and for embroidery on mesh. The golden eye reduces friction and makes threading simple even with bulky yarns.
Blunt: for joining and darning
The rounded tip slides between stitches without splitting the yarn — perfect for joining knitted pieces, finishing edges and sewing with wool, mohair or fluffy yarns that tangle easily.

How do I choose the right yarn needle?
The choice of yarn needle depends on your yarn type and what you need to do. Here are the main criteria:
- Pointed or blunt: use a pointed needle to sew through fabric or embroider on mesh; choose a blunt needle to join stitches without risking splitting the yarn.
- Size (number): low sizes (1–5) for thin yarns (cotton, fingering weight); high sizes (14–22) for chunky and super bulky wool.
- Eye material: the golden eye reduces friction and makes threading easier — ideal for fluffy yarns like alpaca and mohair.
- Steel or plastic: steel is more durable and glides better; plastic is lighter and better suited to delicate yarns or mesh embroidery.
Which yarn needle size should I use for my yarn?
The general rule is simple: the thicker the yarn, the larger the eye needs to be. A needle that is too small struggles to pass through the yarn and may split it; one that is too large leaves the seam loose and weak. As a guide: thin yarns (lace, fingering, DK) → sizes 1–5; medium yarns (worsted, aran) → sizes 14–18; chunky yarns (bulky, super bulky) → sizes 19–22.
SELECTION GUIDE: how to find the right yarn needle
Three variables to pick the right needle first time.
1. Tip
- Pointed: finishing, seaming garments, mesh embroidery — the tip passes between the threads of the fabric
- Blunt: joining knitted pieces, mattress stitch, sewing edges — the rounded tip slides between stitches without breaking them
2. Size
- N. 1–5: thin yarns (cotton, fingering/DK weight, silk)
- N. 14–18: medium yarn (worsted, aran, classic wool)
- N. 19–22: chunky and super bulky wool, fettuccia, mixed bulky yarns
3. Material
- Steel with golden eye: maximum durability, smooth glide, ideal for daily use
- Plastic: lighter, suited to synthetic yarns and plastic mesh embroidery
Frequently asked questions about yarn needles
What is the difference between a pointed and a blunt yarn needle?
A pointed needle is designed to pierce the fabric or yarn: it is used for sewing, mesh embroidery and finishing where the needle needs to pass between threads. A blunt needle has a rounded tip and slides between stitches without splitting them: it is ideal for joining knitted pieces and mattress stitch.
How do I use a yarn needle to seam a knitted garment?
Thread a blunt needle with a length of yarn matching the seam length plus a few extra centimetres. Use mattress stitch or backstitch: insert the needle into the first stitch of the front panel, then into the corresponding stitch of the back panel, and repeat. The result is a nearly invisible seam that preserves the stretch of the fabric.
How do I thread a yarn needle with chunky yarn?
The easiest way is to use the Prym steel needle threader: push the wire loop through the needle's eye, pass the yarn through the loop and pull it out. Alternatively, fold the yarn in half, pinch the fold tight and slide it through the eye — the "fold" technique works well with the wide eyes of yarn needles.
Can yarn needles also be used for crochet?
Yes: blunt yarn needles are perfect for finishing crochet projects — they are used to weave in ends, join motifs (granny squares, hexagons) and sew on accessories. For decorative embroidery on crochet pieces, a pointed needle is preferable as it passes through the yarn precisely.
