How to make a canvas mesh bag using the Bargello technique.
Why Bargello will make you fall in love (even before you thread the needle).
Have you ever had that crazy urge for color knocking at your door while you're sipping coffee? Well, Bargello is just like that: an explosion of waves and geometric flames that turn the canvas into a masterpiece.
The good news? You don’t need to be the Michelangelo of crochet. With the shaped canvas mesh, your imagination flies, the structure stays nice and firm, and the result even convinces that friend who says, “eh, I can’t even hold a skein properly.”
Shopping list.
(Click, add and go. Estimated time: less than it takes to finish your cappuccino.)
WHAT YOU NEED
- Canvas mesh
- Yarn needle
- Yarn or cord with a thickness suitable for the mesh holes.
- Chain
- Magnetic clasp + lining (if you want a chic interior)
- mesh NEEDLE PANDORO
- BARRY CHAIN CLASP
Step by step (no panic, just action)
- Prepare the base. Lay it on the table and check for any stray threads. If you see any, a quick snip and you're ready to go.
- Draw your pattern. Graph paper, a 2B pencil and imagination: waves, flames or diamonds. If you prefer it ready-made, download the free pattern unlocked with your first order (you’ll get it by email, promise).
- Stitch to the rhythm of your playlist. Insert the needle into the first hole, count the stitches like you do with single crochets – except here you work vertically. Keep the tension consistent: the yarn should “hug” the mesh, not strangle it.
- Attach handles & clasp. When the Bargello is complete (and you're already snapping pics like a paparazzi), sew in the lining, insert the magnetic button, and screw in the handles. Total time? One afternoon of clever creativity.
- Self‑love (or gift‑love). Wear the bag to your next aperitif and get your standard answer ready: “Yes, I made it. Yes, everything is on our shop.”

Turbo ideas to personalize:
- Glitter power: add crystals between stitches.
- Plush effect: swap the contrast yarn for a fluffy one (hi, Dion!).
- Bicolor 3D: alternate thick and thin yarns for waves that seem to pop off the canvas.

Why (and how) you’ll love this project
Because it’s easy but eye-catching, because you learn a timeless technique, and because – let’s face it – Bargello is the perfect excuse to play with color without ending up with a “crazy rainbow” effect. Plus, every stitch is practical meditation: needle in, yarn out, breathe, and voilà—the day gets better.
So what are you waiting for? It’s time to try a new technique.
