Baby blanket sizes and more: the complete table

Before the yarn you need the right size. A pram blanket is not the same as one for a cot with bars or a sofa throw. Below you will find the most used standard sizes and, next to each, the grams of yarn needed with crochet or knitting at medium stitch density.

Weights refer to a medium density stitch. Very compact or textured stitches can require 20-30% more yarn, lace stitches a bit less.

How much wool for a baby blanket

It is the most searched question. The practical answer: a pram blanket (70×70 cm) takes 200-300 grams, that is 4-6 balls of 50 g. For the cradle you go up to 300-400 grams. Three tips make the difference:

• Buy all the yarn at once, from the same dye lot: you avoid shade differences between balls.
• Better one ball extra: a blanket stopped for lack of yarn is the classic unfinished project.
• For a baby choose delicate, washable yarns: an extrafine merino wool or a soft cotton, made for sensitive skin and frequent washing.

How to calculate yarn for any blanket (the swatch method)

If you use a special stitch or custom sizes, the reliable method is the 10×10 swatch. Work a 10×10 cm square with your yarn and hook, then weigh it on a kitchen scale. The math is simple: divide the blanket area by 100 and multiply by the swatch weight. Example: cradle blanket 80×100 cm = 8,000 cm² ÷ 100 = 80 squares.
