Granny crochet book cover: handmade gift idea for book lovers.
There’s something deeply poetic about carrying a book with you wherever you go. In your bag, backpack, or on the seat beside you during a train journey. It’s like having a little window open onto your inner world, ready to light up at any moment.
So, why not protect that window with a handmade touch?
A crochet book or planner cover is not just an accessory: it’s a piece of our story woven by hand, a way to say “this is mine, unique like the pages I’m reading.”
All it takes is one skein of Bravissimo Tessiland, a few calm hours, and the magic of the granny square to turn an everyday item into a travel companion full of style and personality.
Granny Square with Bravissimo yarn by Tessiland
Level: easy
Materials:
Bravissimo Tessiland yarn in the colors:
- terracotta,
- military green,
- beige,
- brown,
- mulberry,
- burgundy
- Crochet hook no. 3.5
- Darning needle for finishing
- terracotta military green beige
- brown mulberry burgundy
Basic granny square pattern
1st round (color 1 – for example terracotta):
Start with a magic ring.
Work 3 chains (counts as the first double crochet) and 2 double crochets.
2 chains, then 3 double crochets.
Repeat 2 chains, 3 double crochets two more times (you’ll have a total of 4 groups of 3 double crochets separated by 2 chains).
Load the new color onto the hook, insert it into the 3rd starting chain, and close with 1 slip stitch in the new color.
2nd round and following:
With the new color, go into one of the corner spaces and work:
3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets (this forms the corner).
1 chain, then (3 double crochets, 2 chains, 3 double crochets) in the next corner space.
Continue like this all around.
Always close with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd starting chain and change color at each round.
Continue alternating terracotta, military green, beige, brown, mulberry, and burgundy until you reach the desired size for the square.
Joining the squares
Once you’ve made 6 squares, join them with slip stitches, inserting the hook through the two outer loops of the corresponding stitches.
This way, the join will remain flat and neat.
Final border
Work 1 round of double crochet all around the piece.
In the corners, work:
→ 3 double crochets, 2 chains, and 3 double crochets in the same space.
Tie and finishing touches
In the center of the edge, make a long chain to create the tie that goes around the planner cover.
Then go back, working 1 half double crochet in each chain stitch.
Finally, using the darning needle:
Weave in the yarn ends inside the work.
What if this were your next creative project?
A book cover to show off on the subway, a planner cover for your secret thoughts, or – why not – your first handmade Christmas gift for someone who loves reading as much as you do.
With granny squares, you can play with colors, change layouts, and invent new combinations: every square tells a little piece of your story.
Carry the book you’re reading with you, but do it with a touch of softness, color, and artisan pride.
Because pages turn, but what you create with your hands lasts forever.
Trim any visible threads.
Et voilà!
Your granny planner cover is ready — and who knows, maybe it’s also your first handmade Christmas gift idea!
