Crochet hooded scarf: the easy and quick project you’ll love to make.
When the days get colder and the wind weaves through your hair, there’s nothing more comforting than a handmade hooded scarf. A versatile, cozy, and super trendy accessory, perfect for those who love to combine practicality and style.
The beauty of this project is that it’s suitable for all skill levels: if you’re a beginner, it’s a great exercise to get familiar with half double crochets; if you’re more experienced, you’ll appreciate the simplicity and elegant finish of the final result.
For my version, I chose the CELINE Bordeaux yarn by Tessiland: a choice that captivates at first sight thanks to its soft touch and its intense, warm, and refined shade.
Let’s see together how to make it step by step.
Materials needed:
- 9 skeins of Celine Bordeaux (you’ll use 8 and a small part of the ninth)
- Crochet hook size 5
- 2 stitch markers
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Tutorial: how to crochet a hooded scarf
Base
Make a slip knot and chain 200 stitches (or the desired length for your scarf). Work the first row of half double crochets (hdc) starting in the third chain from the hook and continue to the end. At the end, chain 2, turn your work, and continue.
Scarf panel
Work half double crochets in the back loop only to create the signature ribbed texture. Continue until you reach 20 cm in height (or your preferred width). You’ll get a rectangle about 150 cm long and 20 cm wide.
Forming the hood
Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise. Using stitch markers, mark 70 stitches from each end: the center part will be used to create the hood.
Rejoin the yarn with a slip knot at the marked point and work half double crochets in the back loop from one marker to the other. Work back and forth (chain 2 to turn) until you reach 20 cm in height for the hood section, or the height needed to cover your head.

Top seam of the hood
Do not cut the yarn! Fold the piece in half, aligning the stitches of the top edge of the hood. Join with slip stitches, taking one stitch from each side, to create a clean and even seam.
Cut the yarn, chain one to fasten off, and weave in the ends. Turn the work inside out so that the seam remains on the inside.
Edge finishing
With a 6 mm crochet hook, rejoin the yarn on one side edge of the hood. Chain 2 and work one round of double crochets all around. I preferred to make 3 rounds of double crochets to make the edge thicker.
For the last round, alternate:
- 1 front post double crochet (fpdc)
- 1 regular double crochet (dc)
This small detail creates an elegant and structured raised effect, perfect for giving your scarf extra character.
Final assembly
Make sure to securely weave in all ends with the yarn needle.
Fold the hood to ensure the seam stays inside and… your crochet hooded scarf is ready to wear or to gift!
Creative tip
You can personalize this project by choosing a neutral color for a minimalist look, or a vibrant shade like Celine Bordeaux to add a fashionable touch to your winter outfits.
If you want to make it even more special, add a contrasting border or a drawstring with pom-poms on the sides of the hood.
Comfort and creativity.
The crochet hooded scarf is one of those projects that combine comfort and creativity, perfect to accompany you through the coldest days with a handmade touch that’s all your own.
Soft, warm, and chic, making it will be pure joy… and once you wear it, you won’t want to take it off!
