Which Crochet Hook to Choose?

The perception of "the right one" is always a personal matter and is achieved through one's own experience. However, general guidelines are necessary for choosing the tool to use.

It's true that there aren't specific hooks for wool and cotton. Yet, it's also true that certain materials adapt better to the work we're doing. For working with highly twisted yarns, which thus have a certain resistance and for which a particularly soft hand is not required (referring to Scotland and Perlè yarns), a steel tool is better suited.

Hence, why people commonly and improperly refer to "cotton crochet hooks" in the case of steel hooks, while "wool hooks" for those made of aluminum, plastic, or wood.

Steel hooks certainly have a very important wear resistance and are indicated for crochet work like laces, for example, but it is also true that their specific weight does not allow for the development of sizes much above number 2.
