How to choose your metal crochet hook
Material — aluminum is lightweight, smooth and affordable, perfect for everyday use and long work sessions; steel is stiffer and more precise, ideal for thin yarns, lace and highly detailed stitches.
Size — the most-used sizes range from 2.5 to 5 mm: to try them all without separate purchases, the Prym 5-piece set covers the most requested range in a single pack.
Looking for a single, versatile steel hook for both light and structured projects? There's also the Prym steel crochet hook. To find the right yarn to pair with it, take a look at our yarns.

What's the difference between an aluminum and a steel crochet hook?
Aluminum is lightweight, affordable and smooth: ideal for everyday use and long work sessions. Steel is stiffer and more durable, with a very precise tip: the right choice for thin yarns, lace and detailed work.
When is it best to use a steel crochet hook?
When working with thin yarns — embroidery cotton, lace or filet thread — or when a project calls for edgings and very defined stitches. The steel tip keeps control even on the smallest stitches.
How can I tell the size of a metal crochet hook?
The size in millimeters is engraved on the hook's shaft. On Tessiland colored aluminum models, each size also has a different color, so you can spot it at a glance even in your project bag.
Which metal crochet hook should I choose to get started?
To get started, a lightweight, smooth aluminum hook is the simplest choice. If you want several sizes available right away, the Prym 5-piece set covers the most-used sizes. To find your way between ergonomic, Tunisian and wooden hooks, see the Crochet hooks page.
