Frequently Asked Questions about Tessiland Styrofoam Balls and Shapes
What is the difference between regular and high-density polystyrene?
Tessiland high-density polystyrene is more compact and durable than standard packaging polystyrene: it does not crumble during work, holds its shape under pressure and better tolerates the application of glue, paint or yarn. It is the right choice for long-lasting decorations and for anyone working with techniques that demand surface strength, such as crochet covering or heavy decoupage.
How do you crochet over styrofoam balls?
The most common method is to crochet a tubular cover in single crochet using cotton or acrylic yarn, sized to fit the ball, then slip it over the form — a quick technique suited to beginners too. Alternatively, use the amigurumi method: start at one pole, increase to the equator and decrease to the opposite pole, stuffing as you go. Tessiland blog tutorials cover both techniques with recommended yarns for every ball size.
Are Tessiland polystyrene shapes suitable for decoupage?
Yes — the high-density surface makes them ideal for decoupage with tissue paper, napkins and decorative papers. Decoupage glue bonds well without excessive moisture penetration. The most popular shapes for this technique are balls, stars and eggs, though rings also work very well for wreaths and circular compositions. Important: use water-based paints and adhesives only — solvent-based products will damage the polystyrene surface.
