Bag Shells and Salpa for Crochet Bags
Quick overview: Salpa shells for crochet bags: rigid and semi-rigid pre-formed structures that insert into the bag for a stable shape. 11 models (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Omicron, Zeta, Iota, Sigma, Bauletto and Classic). No cutting, no gluing — insert and the bag stands on its own. From €4.90.
Bag shells are pre-formed structures in salpa (a rigid technical fabric) that insert into the crochet bag: they give a defined, stable shape with no cutting, sewing or gluing. The simplest way to get a bag that stands on its own — insert the shell and you're done.
Looking for a different stiffening method? See canvas mesh, eco-leather stiffeners or back to mesh and stiffeners.
Rigid Shells
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon and Omicron: in rigid salpa, they hold the shape even with heavy bags. The bag won't deform, fold or lose its silhouette. For structured bags, baulettis and shoppers that need to stand upright even when empty.
Semi-Rigid Shells
Zeta, Iota, Sigma and Bauletto: in semi-rigid salpa, they add structure while allowing slight flexibility. The bag holds its shape but isn't a block — it adapts to the contents. For soft bags needing support without losing the yarn's character.

What Is Salpa for Bags and How to Use It?
Salpa for bags is a rigid technical fabric (similar to cardboard but tougher and more flexible) used as the internal structure of bags. Tessiland shells are pre-formed in salpa: nothing to cut or shape — the silhouette is ready.
- Rigid shell → the salpa is thick and won't bend. The bag holds its shape even empty and under stress. For structured bags, baulettis, shoppers.
- Semi-rigid shell → the salpa is thinner and flexes slightly. The bag keeps its silhouette but adapts to the contents. For soft bags needing minimal support.
- How to use → insert the shell inside the bag (between the work and the lining, if present) and position it against the walls. No gluing, no sewing — the pressure of the contents holds it in place.
The difference from a stiffener: the shell inserts and removes (removable), the stiffener is ironed on (permanent).

Frequently asked questions
How do you use a bag shell?
The bag shell inserts into the finished bag, between the crocheted walls and the lining (if present). No sewing or gluing needed: the pre-formed shell sits against the walls and the bag's contents hold it in place. It's removable: take it out when you want to wash the bag or change the stiffness.
Rigid or semi-rigid shell — which is better?
Rigid (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Omicron): for bags that must hold their shape permanently — shoppers, baulettis, structured bags. Semi-rigid (Zeta, Iota, Sigma, Bauletto): for bags needing support while staying soft to the touch — casual bags, tote bags, day bags.
What's the difference between a shell and a stiffener?
The shell is removable: it inserts and removes without altering the bag. The stiffener is ironed on: it's permanent and becomes part of the bag. The shell is simpler (zero assembly), the stiffener gives a more integrated result (eco-leather interior finish).
