How to personalise a jute bag

The jute's open weave works with any technique without any special preparation:

• Crochet applications — make bands, flowers or geometric motifs with thin cotton cord or sewing thread, then stitch them onto the surface with a blunt-tipped needle. Jute holds the stitch without warping.
• Embroidery — cross stitch and satin stitch work perfectly on dense weave. The 26x22 bag with cotton handles offers an ideal embroidery field.
• Macramé and ribbon — braid directly onto the bag's handles or prepare a separate panel to apply. Boho effect guaranteed.
• Stencil and fabric paint — jute absorbs fabric pigments well. Use a stencil and flat brush for quick, beautiful effects with no needle required.

Can a jute bag be washed?

Jute bags with cotton handles can be gently hand-washed in cold water. If you have added crochet applications or embroidery, wash the decorated parts separately by hand to avoid stressing the stitching. Avoid machine washing: jute tends to shrink and lose its shape under spin. The insulated bag with aluminium lining should be cleaned inside with a damp cloth.

What cord should I use to decorate a jute bag with crochet?

For applications stitched onto jute, the ideal cord is thin (2-3mm) and strong: mercerised cotton, sewing thread or linen work perfectly. If you want to make panels to apply, you can also use Thai Sublime or Pandoro Queen in a smaller version. The key is that the cord should be stiff enough to hold the shape of the application once sewn on.

What sizes of jute bag do you sell?

The jute bag with cotton handles comes in two sizes: 26x22 cm (small, practical for everyday shopping) and 42x33 cm (large, for the beach or markets). The bicolour canvas bag is one size, 30x30 cm. The Natural Small insulated bag has compact dimensions ideal for a "lunch bag" format. Check current availability on the individual product pages.

Can I sew directly onto jute with needle and thread?

Yes, jute is perfectly suited to embroidery with needle and thread. Use a tapestry or embroidery needle with a large eye to pass easily between the fibres without breaking them. Cross stitch on jute is particularly effective because the regular weave acts as a natural grid. For crochet applications, sew the finished piece onto the jute with a blunt-tipped needle and strong sewing thread.
