GUIDE: which measuring tool should you choose?
You want to measure and check knitting tension
- KnitPro Round Tape: integrated tension gauge — measures and shows stitches and rows over 10cm in one operation. Essential for fashion pattern knitting.
- KnitPro Square Tape: same function, square casing — purely an aesthetic preference.
You want a comfortable everyday measuring tape
- Ergonomic Prym Tape: auto-retract, ergonomic casing — for daily studio use.
- Classic tailor's tape: flexible, two-sided (cm and in) — the most versatile for general sewing and dressmaking.
You want precision measuring for patchwork and quilting
- Omnigrid Ruler 3×30cm: transparent surface with millimetre grid — for precise geometric cuts including 45° diagonals.
Frequently asked questions about tape measures and gauges
How do I use the tension gauge on the KnitPro tape?
Knit a swatch of at least 15×15cm with the yarn and needles you plan to use. Lay the KnitPro tape on the blocked swatch and count the stitches and rows visible in the 10×10cm window. If the count matches your pattern, your tension is correct. If not, adjust your needle size: larger needles give fewer stitches, smaller needles give more.
What is the Omnigrid ruler used for?
The Omnigrid 3×30cm ruler is designed for patchwork and quilting: its transparent surface with a millimetre grid lets you measure and cut fabric strips with millimetre precision, including the 45° diagonals marked on the surface. Far more accurate than a regular tape measure for geometric cuts.
What is the difference between the KnitPro Round and Square?
The function is identical — 150cm tape with integrated tension gauge. The only difference is the shape of the casing: Round is circular and compact, Square is square and may be easier to rest flat on fabric. The choice is purely aesthetic and personal.
Can a sewing tape measure be used for knitting projects?
Yes, any sewing tape measure can measure knitting projects. However, to check tension before starting a fashion garment you need the tension gauge built into the KnitPro: it counts stitches and rows in the 10cm square more conveniently and accurately than a manual ruler.
