Double Pointed Needles
Quick guide: Double pointed needles (DPN) are sets of 5 short needles (15 or 20 cm) pointed at both ends. Available in bamboo, Cubics wood, ergonomic and nickel-plated steel, sizes 2 to 8 mm. Ideal for socks, hats and sleeves — where circular needles can't fit. Straight knitting needles are in the knitting needles section.
Double Pointed Needles
Double pointed needles — also called DPN or knitting needle set — are the tool for knitting in the round on small diameters: socks, hat decreases, glove fingers, narrow sleeves. You work with 5 needles in rotation: 4 hold the stitches, the 5th works in sequence. The result is a seamless tube on circumferences where circular needles simply can't fit. Tessiland offers double pointed needles by Prym and KnitPro in natural bamboo, Cubics square-section wood, ergonomic and nickel-plated brass — in lengths of 15 to 20 cm and sizes from 2 to 8 mm.
The choice between bamboo, wood and steel depends on your yarn and knitting style. Bamboo grips the yarn slightly — ideal for sock or fingering weight yarn that tends to slide off steel needles. Nickel-plated steel is ultra-smooth: stitches move fast, perfect for knitters who work at a sustained pace. Prym Ergonomics feature a specially treated surface to reduce friction in a calibrated way — less fatigue during long sessions. If you want everything at once, the Prym set from 2.5 to 4 mm is the most practical starting point for the key sizes.
Bamboo and Wood — Natural Grip for Slippery Yarns
Natural bamboo, Cubics square-section wood and smooth wood: porous surface that grips the yarn — fewer dropped stitches when working with mohair, silk or delicate yarns. Light and quiet.
Steel and Ergonomic — Speed and Comfort
Nickel-plated brass KnitPro and Prym Ergonomics: ultra-smooth surface that makes stitches fly — for knitters who work fast or with sturdy yarns. Ergonomic needles reduce hand fatigue during long sessions.

BUYING GUIDE: double pointed needles
Three questions to pick the right DPN set for your project.
1. Which material?
- Natural bamboo: slightly porous surface that grips the yarn — the go-to for sock/fingering weight yarns, mohair and delicate yarns that slip off steel. Light, quiet and warm to the touch
- Cubics wood: square cross-section that doesn't roll off the table and is held differently — reduces finger fatigue for marathon knitters. Surface similar to bamboo
- Prym Ergonomics: calibrated surface treatment — the right balance between speed and grip. Ideal for long sessions and knitters with hand issues
- Nickel-plated brass KnitPro: the smoothest surface — stitches fly. Perfect for acrylic, cotton and sturdy yarns. The 10 cm versions are the shortest available: for the tightest gauges
2. Which length?
- 15 cm: for children's socks, gloves, glove fingers and any small-circumference work. The compact length gives more control over few stitches
- 20 cm: the standard for adult socks, hat decreases, narrow sleeves. The most versatile length — if in doubt, start with 20 cm
3. DPN or magic loop?
- Double pointed needles: 5 needles in rotation, traditional technique. More feel and control — preferred by beginners. No loop to manage: 4 needles hold, 1 works
- Magic loop: a single 80 cm circular needle used on small circumferences with an external cable loop. One tool for everything — but requires practice managing the cable. Circular needles are in the circular needles section
- There's no better method: it's personal preference. Many knitters start with DPNs and later explore magic loop

✨ Tessiland Studio — Double Pointed Needle TutorialsFrequently asked questions
What are double pointed needles and when do you use them?
Double pointed needles (DPN) are short needles — 15 or 20 cm — pointed at both ends, sold in sets of 5. Stitches are distributed across 4 needles and the 5th works in rotation, creating a seamless tube. They are used for knitting in the round on small circumferences: socks (too narrow for a circular needle cord), hat decreases when stitch count drops, glove fingers and narrow sleeves — wherever circular needles can't fit.
How many double pointed needles do I need for a sock?
A set of 5 needles. The classic technique divides stitches across 3 or 4 holder needles, and the free needle — the 5th — works in rotation. All Tessiland DPN sets come in 5 pieces — the standard configuration for both techniques.
What size double pointed needles for socks?
For classic socks in sock or fingering weight yarn the most common size is US 1–2 (2.5–3 mm). For DK weight socks, go up to US 3–6 (3.5–4 mm). For children's socks, go down to US 0–1 (2–2.5 mm). Rule: use the size on your yarn label as a starting point, then knit a 10×10 cm swatch in the round to check gauge.
Bamboo or steel double pointed needles?
Bamboo grips the yarn: stitches don't slide off — a huge advantage with fine sock yarn. Nickel-plated steel (KnitPro) is ultra-smooth: ideal for fast knitters. Many experienced knitters own both: bamboo for quality sock yarn, steel for acrylic. If you're knitting your first pair of socks, bamboo is more forgiving — stitches falling off the needles is the number one problem for DPN beginners.
What's the difference between DPN and circular needles for socks?
Both let you knit in the round, but with different approaches. DPN use 5 short needles in rotation: traditional technique, great tactile control, no cable to manage. Circular needles with the magic loop technique use a single 80 cm needle — more versatile but requires practice managing the loop. DPN are often preferred for first socks because the setup is more intuitive. Circular needles are in the circular needles section.
