Wooden & Bamboo Knitting Needles — Prym
Quick overview: Tessiland's wooden and bamboo knitting needles are straight needles in natural material: Japanese bamboo Prym (33 cm, 2.5 to 10 mm) and polished natural wood Prym (35 and 40 cm, 3 to 10 mm). More grip than metal, lightweight and warm to the touch — the ideal choice for slippery yarns and long sessions. Metal straight needles are in the parent category knitting needles.
Wooden and bamboo knitting needles are the choice for knitters who want comfort, lightness and a natural grip that holds the yarn without slowing it down. Japanese bamboo and polished wood offer a warm, slightly porous surface: stitches stay in place, they don't slide off — a decisive advantage with slippery yarns like silk, viscose, bamboo and mercerised cotton. Tessiland offers two complementary Prym ranges: Japanese bamboo needles at 33 cm (compact and lightweight) and polished natural wood needles at 35-40 cm (longer, for wide projects).
Why choose wood and bamboo for straight needles? The answer lies in the yarn type and hand comfort. Bamboo needles are quieter, don't tire the joints and the natural grip eliminates the need to tension the yarn — the stitch stays where it is. For those who knit fast or use yarns that drag too much on wood (acrylic, bulky wool), the knitting needles in metal and aluminium in the parent category offer more glide.
Japanese Bamboo Prym — 33 cm, Compact and Lightweight
Straight needles at 33 cm in high-quality Japanese bamboo. Shorter than the classic 35-40 cm: less bulk, more control in tight stitches. Smooth surface with medium-high natural grip, rounded tips. Sizes from 2.5 to 10 mm. Ideal for scarves, headbands, swatches and medium-width projects.
Polished Natural Wood Prym — 35 and 40 cm, For Wide Projects
Straight needles in polished solid wood, available in 35 and 40 cm. The extra length holds more stitches — for jumper panels, striped blankets and wide work. Warm, silky surface that improves with use. Sizes from 3 to 10 mm. The choice for those knitting large pieces who want the warmth of natural wood.

Wooden Straight Needles: When to Choose Natural Materials
Wooden and bamboo knitting needles are the first choice in three situations. First: slippery yarns — silk, viscose, bamboo and mercerised cotton slide off metal needles, while wood's natural grip holds them in place. Second: long sessions — wood doesn't chill the hands, makes no metallic noise and weighs less than aluminium. Third: joint problems — the cushioning surface reduces vibrations transmitted to wrists and fingers.
When to choose metal? If you knit fast and want stitches to glide without resistance, if you use yarns that catch on wood (mohair, bouclé), or if you prefer stiffer needles for high tension. The parent category knitting needles shows the full range — metal, wood, bamboo and double-pointed sets.

BUYING GUIDE: wooden and bamboo knitting needles
Two questions to choose the right natural-material straight needles for your project.
1. Japanese bamboo 33 cm or natural wood 35-40 cm?
- Japanese bamboo 33 cm: shorter and lighter — less bulk, more control. Ideal for scarves, headbands, swatches and medium-width work. Bamboo has the best grip-to-glide ratio: holds the yarn without slowing it. The most versatile choice for most projects
- Polished natural wood 35-40 cm: traditional length and the extra. Holds more stitches for wide panels (jumper bodies, blankets). Solid wood is more rigid than bamboo with a surface that improves over time. The choice for those knitting large pieces who want the solidity of real wood
2. Which yarns are they best for?
- Slippery yarns (silk, viscose, bamboo, mercerised cotton): wood/bamboo grip holds the yarn — the stitch doesn't escape. Here natural material clearly beats metal
- Standard wool and blends: work well on both materials — personal comfort choice
- Mohair, bouclé, fuzzy yarns: metal is better — wood's porous surface can snag fibres
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the 33 cm bamboo and 35-40 cm wood needles?
The difference is in material and length. The 33 cm Japanese bamboo needles are lighter, slightly more flexible and shorter — perfect for medium-width projects. The 35-40 cm natural wood needles are solid wood, more rigid and longer — they hold more stitches and are the choice for wide panels. Both offer natural grip and warmth, but bamboo has medium-high grip while polished wood has medium grip.
Are wooden and bamboo needles suitable for beginners?
Yes, they're often recommended as first needles. The natural grip of wood and bamboo holds stitches without dropping them — a common problem with smooth metal needles when starting out. Prym's rounded tips enter stitches without splitting the yarn. For beginners the 33 cm bamboo is the best choice: shorter = more manageable, lighter = less fatigue.
Can I use wooden straight needles to knit in the round?
No, straight needles are designed for knitting back and forth (flat), not in the round. To knit in the round with natural material you need wooden and bamboo circular needles (with a cable connecting both tips) or a set of double-pointed needles (4-5 short needles without cable).
