How to Choose the Right Nylon Thread

Rigid nylon or elastic nylon?

Rigid nylon (monofilament) does not stretch: it is the thread for invisible seams and for securing clic clac clasps, handles and metal hardware. Elastic nylon stretches up to twice its length: it is used for elastic inserts, gathering and waistbands. Need to fix something → rigid. Need the seam to yield under tension → elastic.

Which thickness for clic clac clasps?

The rule is to pick the largest thickness the clasp holes allow. Generally: 0.20–0.25 mm for small clasps and lightweight bags; 0.35–0.50 mm for large clasps and structured bags. The higher the gauge, the stronger and more durable the fixing.

Transparent or black?

Transparent blends with any yarn, even highly saturated colours. Black is preferable on very dark projects — it avoids small white glints that can appear with transparent thread on black or dark-red yarns. If you regularly work with mixed colours, keep both at hand.

Rigid nylon (monofilament) is the right choice: its stiffness prevents fraying in the small metal holes of the clasp. Choose the maximum thickness the holes allow — generally 0.25–0.35 mm for most formats. Use transparent on light yarns; black on dark yarns to avoid glare.

Can transparent nylon thread be used in a sewing machine?

Rigid nylon is not ideal for sewing machines: its stiffness creates uneven tension in the bobbin. For invisible machine stitching, a Gutermann thread in a neutral shade is a better choice. Transparent nylon is best worked by hand with a fine needle (size 9–11).
