How does a turn lock closure work?
The mechanism is simple: a fixed part ("keeper") is attached to the front of the bag; the rotating part (the "lock") slots into the keeper and turns 90° to close the bag. To open, turn the lock back.
Advantages over magnetic snaps:
- More decorative — visible on the outside, it becomes a design feature
- Creates no magnetic field — safe with credit cards and phones
- Suitable for unstructured bags too, no lining required

What is a turn lock and how is it fitted?
A turn lock consists of two parts: the keeper (fixed, attached to the front of the bag) and the lock (rotating, which closes the bag by slotting into the keeper and turning 90°). It is fitted by securing the keeper with screws or rivets at the closure point. No sewing required: all fixing hardware is included in the kit.
Is the Chanel-style turn lock only decorative or also functional?
Both. The square turn lock (known as "Chanel style") is both a highly recognisable decorative element and a fully functional closure: it holds the bag shut just as effectively as any other turn lock. The square shape with rounded corners is simply the most sought-after among our customers.
Which materials work with a turn lock closure?
Turn locks work on any material rigid enough to hold the fixing point: tubular cord, raffia, lycra bags with lining, stiff fabrics. They are not ideal on very stretchy or soft yarn without backing, as the anchor point tends to give way under weight. In those cases, opt for a magnetic snap with prongs instead.
Can I use a turn lock without a lining?
Yes, unlike magnetic snaps with prongs. Turn locks are fixed with screws or rivets directly onto the work, without needing to fold prongs into a backing fabric. For raffia bags, thick cord or structured crochet, you can apply it directly — though an internal reinforcement (even a small square of eco-leather) always improves long-term durability.
