Iggy Cotton for Crochet - Everyday Excellence
Welcome to the world of Iggy, Tessiland®’s community favourite no.3 cotton. This isn’t just a yarn—it’s a trusted companion for your most creative projects. From fresh, breathable summer garments to amigurumi that need definition and stability, Iggy delivers unbeatable value for money. It’s a true “workhorse” yarn in the best sense: durable, reliable, and always ready when you are.
Why is it the “Creators’ Choice”?
Iggy’s versatility comes from its structure. It’s a round yarn that doesn’t flatten as you work. That makes it a go-to for amigurumi lovers: single crochet stitches come out tight and compact, helping prevent stuffing from showing through, while the wide range of “skin” shades (from cream to dusty rose) lets you create dolls with realistic complexions.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: what are you really buying?
Many yarns look the same in photos, but it’s the production technology that makes the difference between a piece that lasts one season and one that lasts for years. Let’s take a closer look at Iggy.
1. “Gassed & Mercerized”: what are the benefits?
Iggy goes through a double refining process:
- Gassing: the yarn runs at very high speed through a flame. This “burns off” the excess fuzz from raw cotton. Result for you: a super-smooth yarn that glides quickly on the hook without snagging, and gives crisp stitch definition.
- Mercerizing: a tensioned bath that changes the fibre’s cross-section (from flat to round). Result for you: cotton gains a natural sheen (silk-like), improves tear resistance and, most importantly, becomes more hydrophilic—absorbing dye better for brighter, deeper colours.
2. Knots: an honest deal
A knot is a technical necessity in the textile industry to join cones during spinning. No producer in the world can guarantee “zero knots”. However, Tessiland makes the difference with quality control. Iggy is checked individually. Statistically, knots in Iggy are far fewer than the market average for budget cottons.
Expert tip: if you find a knot, never work it in. Cut the yarn and use an “invisible join” or a “Russian join” instead. This ensures your project won’t come undone over time.
3. Colour fastness: managing contrast
Planning to pair a rich Red or Navy Blue with White? Iggy has excellent colour fastness, but cotton chemistry has its rules. Dark shades saturate the fibre and, during the first washes, may release excess unfixed pigment (a normal initial bleed).
Best practice: for high-contrast projects (e.g., white and red stripes), we always recommend pre-treating the dark shade or using colour-catcher sheets on the first wash. For these critical combinations, wash in cold water or at max 30°C.
4. Dye lots and shade variations
As a natural fibre, cotton absorbs dye depending on ambient humidity and temperature. Small differences between dye lots are a sign of naturalness, not a defect.
Tip: always buy one extra ball beyond your estimate. Tessiland® restocks frequently, but dye lots change fast. Having a spare from the same lot can save your project!
5. Pilling: why Iggy pills less
Pilling is caused by friction pulling short fibres out of the twist. Thanks to gassing (which removes short fibres) and a well-balanced twist, Iggy resists pilling far better than standard cottons. With correct care, your top will stay smooth like day one.
Care: make your garments last longer
Wash Iggy at a maximum of 40°C (delicate cycle), avoid bleach and tumble drying, which can dry out the fibre and make it feel rough. Iron at medium temperature (max 150°C) with a damp cloth to revive the mercerized sheen.

✨ TESSILAND STUDIOFrequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
• How many balls do I need for a top?
Yardage is subjective and depends on your personal tension and the stitch used. As a guideline: for a size 42/44 tank top in stockinette you’ll need about 5-6 balls. For a size 44/46 short-sleeve top, about 8-9 balls. For a crochet summer top (size M), 4-5 balls are often enough.
• Is Iggy suitable for beginners?
Absolutely—it’s one of the best cottons to learn with. Thanks to the gassing process, the yarn is clean and well-defined: you can clearly see your stitches and undo your work (if you make a mistake) without the yarn getting damaged or splitting.
• Does the yarn split while working?
Iggy has a medium twist designed specifically to reduce splitting when crocheting. If you notice splitting, try changing hook size (a very sharp or too-small hook can cause this) or check your hand tension.
• Is it stiff or soft?
It sits right in the middle. It’s not as stiff as “Cablé” (often used for doilies), but it has more structure than a microfiber. It feels soft on the skin while holding its shape well, helping avoid the “saggy” look that can happen with very soft cottons after washing.
• Can I use it for swimwear?
Yes—many customers use it for bikinis. As cotton, it holds a bit more water than synthetic fibres (like microfiber or Lycra) and dries more slowly, but it feels natural on the skin. Tip: work it with tight tension or add a stretchy lining.
• Can I pair Iggy with other Tessiland yarns?
Of course. Iggy is a standard “no.3” thickness. You can hold it together with a Lurex thread for sparkle, or pair it with a strand of Mohair for chic, durable winter makes.
